Preserving the sanity of our community social workers
The scene is horrific. Dead bodies. Blood. Panic. Crying spouses, parents or children. A family is torn apart. A colleague or friend is murdered. Our team of social workers and psychologists are often the ones that inform a family that their spouse and parent, or sibling has been killed or severely injured in an attack. We meet these families at the hospital or the morgue to help identify their loved ones, and then stay with them throughout the first night, during the funeral and maintain contact with them in the days and weeks after the tragedy. This scene has played itself out too many times over the last four years, and it has taken a serious emotional and physical toll on our workers. These brave social workers never imagined they would be called into action with such intensity over the last two years. Indeed, with 60 people killed and more than 100 severely injured, in addition to the dozens of other traumatized residents and intervention in the schools to cope with the constant pressure, it has had a severe effect on our workers. These workers receive no additional financial remuneration for their 24-hour-a-day, seven-days-a-week service. We plan to convene a stress-reducing weekend for the entire department staff and their spouses. The program would also be an opportunity to develop more of an organizational cohesiveness, which would be a benefit the next time tragedy strikes. Here's how you can help: Cost per couple for weekend......US $115 (does not include $25 registration fee to be paid for by participants) Send the social work department ....... US $4,025 (including 18% VAT $4,750)
